Another thing the rich haven't reckoned with is: if their plan proceeds, there will be large stretches of land, perhaps whole countries, where there won't be enough living to even bury the dead, who will rot where they died. Air travels all over the planet; imagine having the smell of death in the air for 10-20 years! Everywhere! Are these bipeds so devoid of fellow-feeling that they're willing to smell death for so many years rather than be any less wealthy and powerful?!
