God, I wish I knew. One answer comes to the mind of this aging second-generation white Southern anti-racist: RACISM as articulated by LBJ to the young Billy Don Moyers, as he still called himself then:

If you can convince the lowest white [person] that [they're] better than the best colored [person], [they] won't notice you're picking {their] pockets. Hell, give [them] someone to look down on and [they'll] empty [their] pockets for you.

And too many of my 'fellow' palefaces would rather be White and broke rather than share with people of color. Same way too many Arabs in 'Palestine' would rather be miserable but Judenrein rather than share in happiness with Israel.
