I guess I was really lucky that, when we moved to Philadelphia, my folks found a successfully integrated neighborhood for us to live in. West Mt. Airy is definitely (or at least it was in the 60s and 70s) such a success story. So I grew up with African-American families being a large segment of my friends and neighbors. That has to have helped a lot.
