I guess my folks were fairly farsighted liberals. When we moved to Philadelphia in 1965 so my mom could study at what was then Women’s Medical College (she is now a retired oncologist and, so far as I can tell, still has all her marbles at 91) they moved us into a rarity of a neighborhood: West Mt. Airy, one of the (very?) few successfully integrated neighborhoods in the whole country. I guess growing up in such a place shapes one pretty powerfully. We, too, need to digest our neighborhood isn’t the whole country, though.
