I imagine some atheists DO make it there. I suspect 'making it to Heaven' has much more to do with how many other people, or other creatures and creations, are 'real' to anyone--and to what extent, than any recited creed or even real faith in embodiments of God's Love. I'm willing to bet anyone to whom another human, or animal, is as real as themselves, touches the face of God and thus has their 'ticket punched' for Heaven. I also suspect they don't bellyache about that much if at all.

As for eternal torment, I'll let you in on a secret: most of the early Church Fathers (and Mothers?) that Hell was NOT eternal for anyone except perhaps the devils themselves. Google up St. Eusebius for one.
