I suggest it began with Christians being subjects or, sometimes, citizens of Rome. Rome's economy and that of most of its empire was AT LEAST as dependent on slaves as was our antebellum South or pre-emancipation Brazil! If Christians had noisily called for freedom for all the slaves, would there even be a Christian church today? Think about it!
