I wouldn’t say I ‘assume the good in people.’ However, the faith I at least try to follow obliges me to take a chance, that is, to bet on, the good in people as opposed to their depravity even in the face of a real or imagined failure of goodness in them, maybe even to the point of my own injury if I’m the only one so injured. You can say that it amounts to the same thing if you wish, although I wouldn’t say so.
