I'm not sure that was Haiti. I read that it was actually Guadaloupe. Of course, if an island so much smaller generated such wealth, God only knows how much Haiti generated.

I don't know about Mansa Musa's debts but I've read that, when he went to Mecca, he gave and spent so much gold that his hajj actually knocked down the price of gold for at least a generation.
