In Shirer’s great work The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, he mentions why Rommel wasn’t all for the plot to kill Hitler. Quote:
“To kill the dictator, he argued, would be to make a martyr of him. He wanted Hitler arrested by the army and haled before one of his own People’s Courts for crimes against the German people and those of the occupied countries.”
