In Volume 4 of his A HIstory of the English-Speaking Peoples, Churchill writes of Sherman's march through South Carolina: "In Lincoln's Cabinet men spoke seriously of obliterating Charleston and sowing the foundations with salt." Maybe they should have. Maybe, too, Charleston owes its current existence to the 'colored' tradespeople who lived and live there and without whom there would be no Charleston.
Again, Walter, one of your best. This one's so far out of the ballpark I don't know where it'll land!!
