My apologies. I think the best I can really do is define what I see as the ‘hearthstone’ for any fascist. And I perceive that as either an inability or, more often, an unwillingness to comprehend how some humans genuinely feel for other creatures when they themselves are not directly involved. That is, they feel only for themselves and others most like them.
I certainly didn’t mean to sound overly grand; rather, I wanted to be as precise as I knew how. Guess I ain’t particularly good at it here.
Being a Brit, you may know what was said about Gladstone’s and Disraeli’s different speaking styles: “When Mr. Gladstone speaks, he gives you the impression he is the smartest man in the UK. But when Mr. Disraeli speaks, he gives you the impression that YOU are the smartest person in the UK.” Except when faced with obvious and arrogant ignorance, I always try for Disraeli’s style and never for Gladstone’s. I guess with you, I didn’t quite get there.
