“Palestine’ was never a nation. At first, it was a name dredged up by the emperor Hadrian (Syria-Palaestina) to stick on what was still rightfully Judea in order to try and erase the Jewish connection to the land after the Bar Kochba revolt in 132 C.E. Then, nineteen centuries later, the British used it as a name for the promised state for the Jews. Then they proceeded to let in more Arabs than Jews between 1920 and 1948.
And Arabs themselves have said as much. Zahir Muhsein, a high official of the PLO, said as much in a 1977 interview with a Dutch magazine. So, too, have officials of Hamas: one has said that ‘Palestinians’ are half from Egypt and half from Saudi Arabia. I should in fairness say I don’t know if he spoke only of Gazans or of all Arabs within the land.
FYI: In between ‘Palestines’ and Israel’s rebirth, the land was mostly called South Syria. As late as 1970 most Arabs within the land called themselves South Syrians.
So, sweetums, learn some real history or press your light-brown shirt with the armband on it.
