Thanks for this. On my dad's side, my ancestors were part of the minority of Southern whites who the ex-planters called 'scalawags' during Reconstruction. Which meant, they were largely pro-Union with a liberal sprinkling of antislavery people and,hence, were willing to join the freed people and the Yankee Carpetbagger transplants in the Reconstruction state governments.
