That is so. It reminds me of a passage from Bernard Malamud's novel The Fixer, about a Jew accused of 'ritual murder' and being held in a Czarist prison:

'Those who persecute the innocent are themselves never free. Instead of consoling him, that thought filled the fixer with rage.' Which in turn ties back to James Baldwin's remark about being an African-American in America today.
